How to Lower Your Electric Bill

Is your electric bill getting the best of you every month? Electric bills can be a huge expense every month but before you call it quits on your big dream home and move into a small one-bedroom apartment, take a look at what you can do to help.

First of all, call your local utility service company.  Most of them will provide a free energy audit of your home.  This audit will show the problems as to where you are losing valuable energy in the form of heating and cooling.  They will also make some suggestions to cut costs such as foam inserts that go around outlets and switches cutting down on heat loss.  Films for your windows can lower the temperature of your house in the summer time.  You don’t have to live in the dark to reduce your electric bill.

In the warmer months, keep your thermostat at 80 degrees when you are at work and lower to a more comfortable temperature when you are home.  There is no reason to keep your air conditioning on full blast when you aren’t home.  If you have concerns about your pets, keeping the temperature at 80 degrees is very comfortable for them.

Invest in low wattage lamps and nightlights.  You can try cooling off the house by opening all of the windows and turning on a whole house fan that sucks up the air.  What this does is it brings in all of the cool air from the outside.  In the wintertime, you can try using an electrical heater.  Lower the heat in the house and plug in the heater in the room that you are occupying.  You would be surprised how much this saves you.  There is no sense in heating up the whole house when you can only be in one room at a time.

Another great way to cut the bill is to seal off unused rooms.  Shut the heating ducts off and close the doors.  The heating system will run shorter cycles and only heat the rooms that are being lived in.   However, be careful with bathrooms you don’t want your pipes to freeze.

Don’t keep your computer running all day and night either.  Not only is this bad for your computer, but it is a waste of money.

Get an insulation jacket for your hot water tank.

Clean your furnace.  This is something that people do not even think to do.  If your furnace is dirty, it takes a lot longer to heat up and won’t burn efficiently.  This results in your blower running much longer than it should.  End result? Huge electric bill.

Installing attic fans will vent hot air outward.  You may have to install more than one depending on the size of the attic in your house.  If the attic entrance is inside the house, make sure that edges are insulated as well.  Getting a thermostat timer is a great thing to do since you don’t want to heat or cool the house when your not home.

Try hanging your clothes outside to dry rather than using the dryer.  It’s better for your clothes anyway.

You can also try buying compact fluorescent light bulbs.  This will lower your electric bill a great deal.
